J. Douglas Patterson, M.D.
After being raised on the Jersey Shore, Dr. J. Douglas Patterson attended college at Duke University. There, he majored in Biology while swimming distance freestyle for the Men's Varsity Swim Team and graduated magna cum laude in 1990. He then entered Harvard Medical School. Between his third and fourth years, he took a year off to pursue orthopaedic biomechanical research that he had begun during his second year. These investigations won several prestigious awards and were presented around the country and in Europe. This research also lead to an honor thesis allowing him to graduate from Harvard Medical School with honors in orthopaedic science in 1995.
After completing medical school, Dr. Patterson entered surgical internship at the New England Deaconess Hospital. His orthopaedic training then began in the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Brigham & Women's Hospital. At this time, however, Dr. Stock Patterson (his wife) earned her Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was offered a faculty position at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. After much consideration, Dr. Patterson transferred to the Duke Orthopaedic Residency, completing the program in 2000. Again, he was active in orthopaedic research and earned recognition for research that he performed while at Duke.
The Pattersons then returned to Boston: Dr. Stock Patterson as a visiting professor at MIT's Sloan School of Business and Dr. Patterson as a Harvard Hand & Upper Extremity Fellow at the Massachusetts General, Brigham & Women's and Boston Children's Hospitals.
Dr. Patterson joined Orthopaedic Specialists in 2001. He practices orthopaedic surgery sub specializing in hand & upper extremity surgery. He is Board Certified in orthopaedic surgery and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery. Dr. Patterson has privileges and practices at Christiana, Wilmington, St. Francis and A.I. Dupont Hospitals. He and his wife live in Wilmington with their three children and dog, Pop.
